Conventional 5-axis machining centers vs. pentapods
The benefits of the icosahedron design and pentapod kinematics
The design of the Pentapods is not only based on a design concept, but also offers many other advantages, so that the Pentapods are ahead of the conventional 5-axis machine in many areas. Thanks to regular investment in research and development, these machines offer the highest level of innovation.
Conventional machining center

The outdated box design only offers limited rigidity and requires an (expensive) foundation
The side-mounted spindle leads to instability and inaccuracies during machining
5-axis movement only with the aid of unstable 5-axis heads or heavy and sluggish rotary/swivel tables, which are inaccurate and energy-intensive with increasing component size
Pentapod machining center

The icosahedron design offers the highest inherent rigidity and makes foundations superfluous
5 struts (pentapod) hold and move the spindle with an accuracy of up to 3 µm
Fast and dynamic 5-axis machining of the spindle thanks to the pentapod and the low spindle weight

High-tech 5-axis machining center with a new design
Discover the P series product line
The design of the P-series product line is completely different from conventional 5-axis machining centers. The design and construction result in unique advantages for the manufacturing process. On the one hand, the design in the form of an icosahedron achieves a very high inherent rigidity and, on the other hand, the five-strut design and the 5-axis movement of the machine spindle (from above) achieve a very high level of space efficiency.
We build machining centers in four different sizes. All machining centers can be equipped with an automatic tool change system, a rotary table, adaptable linear units and tools for hybrid production (e.g. subtractive machining with additive manufacturing). The control panel can be detached from the machine and positioned according to the operator’s wishes.

Additive manufacturing with 5-axis machining centers
Hybrid manufacturing – milling and 3D printing in a Pentapod 5-axis machining center
Thanks to the integration of 3D printing tools in our 5-axis machining centers, the production of large, industrially relevant components using additive manufacturing is no longer a hurdle. The DED processes (WAAM and LMD) and SEAM are innovative methods for the rapid production of metal and plastic parts.
In our CNC machines, the printed components can be intermediate or post-processed in the same workpiece clamping (milling, drilling and other processes). Thanks to our 5-axis kinematics, additive manufacturing of additional components on existing parts is also possible.

Screw Extrusion Additive Manufacturing (SEAM)
We have integrated the SEAM 3D tool for printing large plastic parts into our CNC machines. Compared to filament-based printers, this process delivers large components quickly and cost-effectively, which are suitable for industrial use thanks to the integration of reinforcing fibers. This tool can be used in the stationary P-Series and our mobile machine. The advantage here is hybrid production – additive manufacturing of plastic components with intermediate or downstream CNC milling for mobile use.

The invention of Pentapod: a new era in manufacturing
The idea of developing machines with parallel kinematics was born over 25 years ago. The hexapod design with its six struts fascinated many engineers in the 1990s, but was not yet ideal for a processing machine. Dr. Michael Schwaar had the groundbreaking idea of designing parallel kinematics with one less strut, thus creating the Pentapod. The Pentapod design enables full 5-sided machining, revolutionizing precision manufacturing and automation. Here are the three key benefits of the Pentapod design:
Versatile applications: The unique design of the Pentapod enables the machining of complex geometries on a wide range of materials and offers a high degree of flexibility in manufacturing processes.
Maximum rigidity: The strut and frame design of the Pentapod increases rigidity and accuracy compared to conventional CNC machines.
Increased efficiency: The Pentapod’s 5-axis machining capabilities enable faster and more efficient production, reducing production time and costs.
Innovative CNC machines. Outstanding results.
Pentapod 5-axis machining centers: trusted by leading companies.

Steffen Keitel – CEO SLV Halle GmbH

“For the Hybrid Manufacturing department of the BTU Cottbus – Senftenberg, METROM represents a forward-looking project partner within the WI+R alliance. METROM, with its unique CNC machines, forms the basis for one of the most flexible and sustainable repair factories worldwide.”
Prof. Sebastian Härtel – BTU Cottbus

“We successfully cooperate with METROM in joint research projects. We are enthusiastically using a Pentapod system from METROM. Especially the possibility of hybrid component production by means of SEAM 3D printing and machining in one system expands the range of applications enormously.”
